The word "crouton" comes from the French word croûte, which means crust. Historically, the crouton was originally a slice of a baguette which was brushed with oil and baked in a fire-heated oven. In France, crouton is not only a name but also a cooking form that describes the process in the kitchen, where you turn bread into crust.
Today we know the crouton as small cubic pieces of bread that have been sautéed in butter on the pan and seasoned with herbs. The crouton is especially a known ingredient in the Caesar salad, but can also be used advantageously as a crispy feature on green salads or fire-warm soups.
